Yes, the bird certainly is “only a black kite” but it was enough to show how excellent the 200-400’s auto-focus performance is, but the exercise, quite in the physical sense of the word, also illustrated how, although black all right, the lens is certainly not a kite, in that it offers not any of the bird’s or the papery flier’s lightness and agility and is more like a bull pup – much too heavy and unwieldy if your arm is alone in supporting it against gravity and always eager to leap off your hands like a determined pup desperate to be reunited with its owner, thanks to a very heavy front where a good amount of lead appears to have been deposited to aid precisely this enthusiastic disposition to severance from the incumbent.
