Transience

A Transient Youth: Spotty cub in November 2017

The transience of youth is a pervasive reality, and this is particularly acute in cats because of how quickly they leap progressively through the milestones of hapless infancy, radiant youth, uncertain adolescence and composed adulthood. Yet, seasons come and seasons go and stubbornly unlearning, in our infinite naïveté, we continue to be transfixed by the speed of change. And so as I excitedly prepare to return to Bandhavgarh for my twelfth straight summer this weekend, I’m seized by the revelation that ours is not the work of fighting or resisting change, but of finding that core of constancy in it, and with our stricken hearts that seek permanence, use the memory of a photograph as an antidote to ephemerality.
